St. Nicholas Abbey
There are only three remaining Jacobean mansions in the Western hemisphere. This is one of them. Lovingly restored and set in park-like gardens surrounded by cane fields, the heritage gem brings the romance and rue, the toil and grandeur of the plantation era to life. There is so much to appreciate, from gardening to early technology, from antiques to rum production, from plantation agriculture and the role of enslaved Africans, to architecture and hurricane lore. The impact is heightened by a rare 1930s documentary on sugar production, and a steam-driven sugar cane mill which operates on specific days during cane season (February – July.) A carefully-blended rum is bottled here. Bottles can be purchased, and can be personalised by instant etching onto special decanters.
